Sacha Baron Cohen returned to Twitter for the first time in 2021 to respond to the siege of the American Capitol by pro-Trump insurgents. The Borat comedian addressed the executives of the giants Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Google on social media and asked that Donald Trump should make a complete ban on the platforms after the American president ‘incited a violent attack on American democracy ”.
Baron Cohen’s report reads as follows: “Hey Mark Zuckerberg, Jack [Dorsey], Susan Wojcicki and Sundar Pichai, Donald Trump only incited a violent attack on American democracy. Is it FINALLY enough to act ?! It’s time to ban Donald Trump from your platforms once and for all! ”
Facebook has been a target of Baron Cohen for several years. During a viral speech in 2019, the comedian called the social media venture founded by Zuckerberg the ‘biggest propaganda machine in history’. Baron Cohen elaborates on this point in an essay for Time magazine in 2020, calling Facebook ‘Trump’s conscientious ally’ to create ‘a whirlwind of conspiracy madness’. It is noteworthy that “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” contains a scene in which the main character believes a conspiracy theory of Facebook about the Holocaust.
“The Demagogue chief has a willing accomplice on Facebook from Mark Zuckerberg – a megaphone that the worst autocrats in history could only dream of,” Baron Cohen wrote on Facebook. “The algorithm deliberately amplifies content that causes more engagement … It’s not surprising that the top ten Facebook posts are mostly overwhelming from right-wing experts and outlets.”
Baron Cohen often uses his Twitter profile to share messages from the Center for Countering Digital Hate. At the end of December, the comedian brought to the attention of his followers that Facebook and Instagram are home to “anti-vaxx accounts with 40 million followers”, as well as “accounts selling neo-Nazi merchandise to extremism to the to the right. ”
Responds in November to news that Facebook will not ban Steve Bannon from the platform, after asking for the beheading of dr. Anthony Fauci, Baron Cohen mailed, “Reprehensible. Mark Zuckerberg confirms that Facebook will not ban people who commit murder – as long as they do not do it too often! Make no mistake – like Myanmar and Kenosha, more innocent people will be killed. And Facebook will be why. ”
