Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny sent to infamous prison camp

The lawyer of the Russian opposition leader, Alexei Navalny, confirms that his client was moved from a prison in Moscow to one of the most notorious prison camps in Russia to serve his sentence. Navalny, who survived a poisoning attempt, is serving a two-year, six-year sentence for disregarding probation while being hospitalized for the poisoning. The facility, about 60 kilometers from Moscow, is known as a ‘red zone’ prison, defined by the hard manual labor that prisoners have to perform. Activist Konstantin Kotov was released from prison after 18 months and told The New York Times he is constantly subjected to intimidation by guards and punished for not saluting officers. He was also penalized with solitary confinement for borrowing another prisoner’s gloves after the pair sent by his family members were confiscated. “Alexey is going to be very difficult,” Kotov said. “The administration keeps your attention at every step.” The head of the Russian prison service told the state-run Tass news service that there was “no threat” to Navalny’s “health or life” in the prison.
