Russian doctor continues open heart surgery despite burning buildings

They can definitely withstand the heat.

A team of Russian doctors has completed open-heart surgery – even though the hospital has consumed the flames.

The eight doctors and nurses were left behind to complete the procedure after a fire broke out on the roof of the clinic in the city of Blagoveshchensk in the Far East on Friday.

“We can do nothing else. We had to save the person, “surgeon Valentin Filatov told Russian network REN TV.

“We did everything at the highest level.”

Firefighters, who took more than two hours to put out the fire, said they used fans to keep smoke out of the operating room and ran in with a power cable to supply it with electricity.

The operation also took about two hours before the patient was taken to another hospital, the country’s emergency services said.

About 128 people were evacuated immediately after the fire broke out.

“The clinic was built more than a century ago, in 1907, and the fire spread like lightning through the wooden ceilings of the roof,” the ministry said.
