The Seahawks are looking for an offensive coordinator after the team decided to separate from Brian Schottenheimer.
The man, known as ‘Schotty’, spent three seasons in Seattle and the Seahawks set up historic numbers during that time.
But after a rough, early playoff game this past weekend against the LA Rams, it appears the Seahawks may need to change coaches.
Pete Carroll, head coach, commented on Monday morning on the state of his offense, saying: “We need to run the ball better, not even better, we need to run more. We need to determine what’s going on with the people we play., And that’s one of the ways to do it. ‘
He also said Schottenheimer will return.
However, that was really not the case. Referring to ‘philosophical differences’, the team decides differently 24 hours later.
It is not difficult to read between the lines. Seattle had an OC who preferred to pass the ball and a head coach who wanted to manage it more. Something had to give and Carroll had the power.
After the news broke Tuesday, Seattle was shaken. But no one, coaches, players as well as fans, will be more affected by the change than the Russell Wilson of the Pro-Bowl fullback.
Wilson, who heard the news, used social media to give an open letter to his former offending coordinator.
Grateful can be an understatement.
Over the past three seasons, Schotty, Russ and the Seahawks combined 33-15 and had an offense that was almost unstoppable.
This season alone, Wilson passed for a career high of 40 touchdowns and he was just eighty yards away from a new career high in 4,224. His 384 completions, 558 attempts and 68.8% percentage were all career highlights.
Over the past three seasons, Wilson has had a total of 11,770 yards, 106 touchdowns and 25 interceptions. Although he intercepted a career high of 13 this season, it was definitely a by-product of more than ever before.
Interestingly, Seattle has taken this step with Carroll wanting to drive more. Actually, it just doesn’t make sense. Seattle has MVP talent on quarterback, and with Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf he has the best wide receiver duo in the league. Metcalf alone is one of the best receivers in the league and compares to Calvin Johnson.
Another season for Metcalf, Lockett and Wilson to grow under Schottenheimer would have been tight for the NFL. Instead, Carrol and Co opened up the search for the next caller in the team.
Wherever Schotty lands, his new city will definitely be happy to have him.
As Wilson said, “Going to be great.”
