Rumor Roundup: Goldberg Return, Original Raw Plans, Mickie James, More!

Speculation about the rumors surrounding pro-wrestling is a popular pastime for many fans, perhaps the second to watch the matches. In this daily column, we take a look at the latest rumors being spread by the pro-wrestling backstory.

Important reminder: rumors are just that – rumors. None of this has been confirmed as a fact, it just circulates around the rumor mill. We track the accuracy of rumors in a weekly feature called Rumor Look Back, which you can find here. Remember, take it all with a pinch of salt.

Rumors for the day:

  • Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio said WWE just decided to challenge Goldberg Drew McIntyre for the WWE Championship on Royal Rumble this past Saturday.
  • Not surprisingly, they also say that the match between McIntyre and Keith Lee took too long and that McIntyre was supposed to cut a promotion to which Goldberg would respond, and therefore Goldberg’s promo did not make much sense.
  • PW Insider says the plan was originally for Hulk Hogan to open a promotion in the ring, but they changed it to the cold open they eventually went with.

  • They also say that original plans called for Randy Orton to hold the show against Jeff Hardy, but that was changed late in the day.
  • Inside the Ropes notes that despite reports that Mickie James has been quietly moved to the Legends side of the WWE roster, she’s still an active artist for the company and she’s sure to wrestle.

If you’ve heard of interesting rumors you would like to add, feel free to post them in the comments below. Just remember that these are rumors and are not confirmed as fact, so please take them.
