Rotating outages in Texas underway after Energy Emergency Warning Level 3 was issued, says ERCOT

The Texas Electric Reliability Council (ERCOT) has issued an energy emergency warning (Level 3) to the state, meaning interruptions are underway to reduce demand for the electrical system.

“We urge Texans to put safety first during this time,” ERCOT said in a tweet early Monday morning.

ERCOT says traffic lights and other infrastructure may be temporarily without power.

ERCOT has urged Texans to reduce their electricity consumption before sending out the Tweet 3 energy emergency warning. It warned that rotary interruptions would be necessary to protect the electrical system.

Here’s how you can help reduce electricity consumption, according to ERCOT:

  • Set the thermostats at 68 degrees at home, or as low as it is comfortably tolerable.

  • Set ceiling fans on winter conditions by turning clockwise to draw off the warm air.

  • Avoid using large appliances (ovens, washing machines and dishwashers).

  • Ensure that doors and windows are properly sealed. Any light through the door indicates that cold air is penetrating.

  • Turn off lights, computers and other electronic devices where possible.
