Rosie Perez says ‘it hurts’ that she has never been invited to the Oscars since the 1994 nomination

Rosie Perez has revealed why fans never see her at the Academy Awards, despite being a previous nominee.

The 56-year-old actress has explained that she has not been invited to the Oscars since her nomination for Fearless in 1994 during an interview with Variety on Thursday.

“Not even to sit in the audience, not to present, nothing – and I’m a member,” the disappointed star said of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

‘I love the Academy Awards. I applaud my peers, but it hurts. “It’s like when your home team does not ask you to come back to the stadium after you got up to bat and hit the home field,” said Perez.

She was the best supporting actress for her work in the award-winning drama as the survivor of a plane crash that had insurmountable feelings of guilt but lost the award to then-11-year-old Anna Paquin.

The Puerto Rican star has built an extensive resume that includes hits such as Do The Right Thing, White Men Can’t Jump and Birds of Prey, but she said it was not easy to set a table in Hollywood as a minority do not insure.

‘The biggest struggle was moving through other people’s shortcomings. “The insignificance of others, racism – and specifically those who do not understand that they are bigots or racists,” she explained.

As the entertainment industry continues to suffer due to the lack of representation, the call for more projects celebrating diversity has only increased.

As Rosie notes, Hollywood takes too long to develop: “Change is happening, but it’s too damn slow.”

Variety cited a 2018 study by the Motion Picture Association of America that found that Latinos had the highest film rate among ethnic groups.

However, they also took note of a 2019 study by the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative in which only 4.5% of all 47,268 speaking or nominated characters were in the best earnings from 2007 to 2018 Latino, as well as only 3% of the lead role or co-starring players.

Rosie was recently seen in the HBO Max hit The Flight Attendant opposite Kaley Cuoco, which she said was a much more accompanying production than she was before.

“I am a complete woman and proud of it. In the past, I would have to ask, ‘Why can’t I get different pants that will fit my big f —— a–?’, ‘Perez admitted.

Her most recent public appearance was during the Golden Globe Awards in February, where she served as presenter. Like the Oscars, she has not received recognition at the event since 1994, but that has not stopped organizers from bringing her back.

The 93rd Academy Awards will be handed out on April 25, so there is still time for the tide to change.
