Ron Rivera laments the quarterback problems in Washington: ‘I made a mistake and I’m capable of it’

Ron Rivera managed to grasp the disastrous NFC East this season and led the Washington soccer tournament to its first division title since 2015. But the team might have fared better if their quarterback situation had been different, at least that’s what the head coach believes to look back on.

Rivera, whose team lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the wild card round, was candid in an interview with WJFK on Monday about his mistakes and he pointed back to the beginning of his problems in training camp.

TAYLOR HEINICKE HOPES BREAK OUT PERFORMANCE AGAINST BUCCANEERS WILL KEEP IN WASHINGTON

“Yeah, I would do that. I would,” he said, giving other quarterbacks a chance. “The biggest thing I would have done is that I created some more opportunities to mix everyone in the area. As opposed to saying, OK, I’m just going to stay with one man and do it. I think now retrospectively, and again, afterwards in 2020, I would. ‘

Washington has gone through four quarterbacks this season.

The season began with Dwayne Haskins, the second-year full-back, before Rivera set him up for Kyle Allen, who he previously coached at the Carolina Panthers.

After Allen suffered a season-end leg injury, Alex Smith was upgraded to the starting quarterback to Washington’s wild card game against the Bucs, when Taylor Heinicke, the fourth string, was named in place of an injured Smith.

“What I’m saying is that I made a mistake and that I’m eligible for it, and that’s the truth,” Rivera continued on Monday. “To put it simply, that’s what I say. I’m just being honest.”

It is unclear in which direction Rivera will go next season in terms of quarterback.

Heinicke made his case during the breakout performance over the weekend, in which Rivera said he deserved an opportunity.
