Ron Rivera finally said what everyone always knew: Dwayne Haskins’ work ethic and dedication were issues. These issues are settled in Haskins and are eventually released.
In a podcast interview with Colin Cowherd, the Washington Haskins coach addressed the team’s difficult tenure. Washington started cutting the fullback after just two seasons and 13, and Haskins signed with the Steelers on January 21st.
“You know what? I tried to get along with him,” Rivera told Cowherd via Nicki Jhabvala The Washington Post. “He’s a very talented player. He has an NFL arm, a legal arm, and he wants a part of him, but something keeps going. I’m not sure what it was, and that was the hard part because he put in the time and then not. And you wonder, ‘Where is he? What is he doing? ‘ You see him there and you go, ‘OK’, and then you do not see him. So I think the thing he needs to do is just prioritize. The kid, like I said, is talented, and if he ever gets it, he’s going to have an impact. ”
When Rivera joined Haskins after the first four games, he said that other back-to-back players with experience in the Washington system had the best chance of winning the NFC East. (He looked like: Kyle Allen and then Alex Smith led Washington to the division title.)
When Smith becomes the appetizer in Week 10, Rivera refers to Haskins’ work ethic.
Haskins scored 3-10 and completed 60.1 percent of his passes for 2,804 yards, with 12 touchdowns and 14 interceptions in his time in Washington.
When Washington Haskins drafted the 15th overall pick in 2019, at the urging of owner Dan Snyder, the team thought it had its franchise quarterback. Instead, Washington is back at the drawing board.
Rivera answered Cowherd’s question about what he was looking for in a quarterback through toughness, a desire to win for teammates and fearlessness. Rivera said he admires Cam Newton’s fearlessness and Smith’s toughness.
Washington will explore “all options” on the quarterback this offseason after moving on from Haskins and Smith.
