Roman Catholic bishops on Friday criticized President Biden’s recent executive order on the application of anti-discrimination protection to certain groups, arguing that it was not properly responsible for religious freedom and that it promoted ‘false theories about human sexuality’.

Signed by bishops from across the country, the statement represents another sharp disagreement that the church leadership had with the second American president who identified himself as a Roman Catholic.
The executive order referred to the ruling of the Supreme Court last year in Bostock v. Clayton County, in which Judge Neil Gorsuch issued a controversial opinion on what is protected under sex-based anti-discrimination legislation.

However, the bishops argued that the executive order did not leave as much flexibility for religious entities as the court.
“Every person has the right to deserving employment, education and basic human services without unfair discrimination,” the bishops’ statement said.
“The law must be protected. However, the Supreme Court’s Bostock ruling unnecessarily ignored the integrity of God’s creation of the two complementary sexes, men and women, with arguments that they considered meaningless.
