Roger Stone: Department of Justice files civil lawsuit over unpaid taxes

In a six-count civil complaint, investigators said Stone and his wife, Nydia Stone, owed about $ 1.5 million in unpaid taxes in 2007 and 2011, and an additional $ 407,000 from 2018.

‘The Stones evaded and frustrated the Internal Revenue Service’s evasion’ by repeatedly lending money to a corporate entity they control, called Drake Ventures, investigators wrote. Stone and his wife then used a Drake Ventures account to finance a lavish lifestyle, despite having paid nearly $ 2 million in unpaid taxes, interest and penalties, they write.

According to the complaint, the Stones allegedly used the Drake Ventures account to pay for personal expenses such as spa visits, haircuts, groceries, restaurants and dentist appointments.

“The government statement is ridiculous,” Stone said in a statement to CNN. “They are well aware that my two years of struggle against the epically corrupt Mueller investigation has left my wife on the verge of bankruptcy. I have continued to make money through my company Drake Ventures. To describe my current lifestyle as ‘luxurious’ “will be ridiculous in court. The political motivation of the DOJ will be very clear during the trial.”

The charge is not an accusation of criminality. Separately, Stone was convicted of lying to Congress and testifying to the Russian investigation, but he was pardoned last year.

During the criminal case, Stone regularly asked for donations from Trump supporters, saying he had little cash and needed help paying his lawyers.

Stone has not yet responded to the civil lawsuit filed in the Southern District of Florida, where Stone lives. In the lawsuit, the Justice Department asked the judge to order Stone and his wife to pay nearly $ 2 million in unpaid taxes, “plus interest … as permitted by law.”
