Riz Ahmed introduced his new bride.
The actor, who revealed this week that he was secretly married, confirmed Wednesday’s episode of “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” that he is married to novelist Fatima Farheen Mirza.
Ahmed, 38, explained that he was not trying to keep his marriage a secret.
‘It’s weird, isn’ t it? “I think because we live in a social media age if you do not go to the megaphone about things as they are, it’s a secret – but I never know how much is being redistributed, ‘he told Fallon. ‘I like matcha latte, but it just never happens. I’m not a secret matcha latte drinker. ‘
The couple initially meet ‘so randomly’ in a New York cafe while preparing his film ‘Sound of Metal’, where he plays a heavy metal drummer who is starting to lose his audience.
“We both sat at the same table in a cafe where we both showed up to write,” he said. “We both stopped at the same laptop, like a very modern way of meeting, and we struck up a friendship and then reconnected.”
He said that meeting Mirza at the time made the film much more special for him.
“Of course I met Fatima for the first time and met so many people in the deaf community who became friends. And there is just something about this whole period around this film that has been life-changing, ‘he said.
What their secret wedding looks like there, Ahmed said they keep things small due to the pandemic.
‘Of course, it kept very intimate and socially distant. “There was just like almost no one there,” he said. ‘We did it in a backyard, which is nice in many ways. And I think the nicest thing about this was that you did not have 500 aunts hanging around you who pinched your cheeks. No contempt of the aunties. ”
He continues jokingly: ‘Asian weddings are big. You always let these people crawl out of the woodwork, who I think are probably fraudsters. They just smell the kebabs on the street and just wander in. ”
Ahmed initially announced the news of his wedding on the January 11 episode of Louis Theroux’s’ Grounded ‘podcast, saying:’ This is the first time I’ve ever mentioned it in an interview. So, congratulations on this incredibly exciting scoop. ”
Mirza is known for her novel ‘A Place for Us’.
