When the Sound of Metal star lets slip that he recently married Louis Theroux’s Based podcast, he would not share his wife’s name, but he changed his mind when he spoke to Jimmy Fallon on January 13 The Tonight Show. The happy lady? Fatima Farheen Mirza, ‘an incredible novelist’ with his award-winning debut in 2018, A place for us, was a New York Times best seller and 2019 One Book, One New York finalist. Ahmed met Mirza in a cafe in New York while he was busy with his Sound of Metal roll. “We were both sitting like a scramble over the same point of a laptop,” he said. “It’s like a very modern way of meeting.”
The one thing led to the other, and eventually the two got married in a ‘super intimate’ ceremony in the backyard. Ahmed told Fallon that he did not mean it to be a ‘secret’ wedding, as it is characterized. “I never know how much over – distribution there is,” he explained. ‘I like matcha latte, but it just never happens. I’m not a secret matcha latte drinker. At least not anymore! But the best part of his little pandemic wedding? “You did not hang 500 aunts around you who pinched your cheeks,” Ahmed said. ‘No contempt for the aunts, but Asian weddings are great, and you always let these people crawl out of the woodwork, which I think are probably deceivers. They just smell the kebabs on the street and just wander in, like, ‘Yeah, I knew you when you were a kid!’
