Police also shot dead a man in Lents Park, southeast of Portland, on Friday morning. The victim, a white man in his thirties who was not identified, died at the scene.

Deputy Police Chief Chris Davis told reporters that officers used a rifle and weapons that fired ‘non-lethal projectiles’.

Davis did not know if the man aimed a weapon at officers, but a witness told The Oregonian / OregonLive that the man removed his shirt and blocked an intersection during a possible mental health crisis.

Earlier this week, protesters lit fireworks in front of the Portland Police Association building and lit a fire behind the building. Police claim “accelerators on a door” helped light the fire.

Mayor Ted Wheeler supported the calls for accountability of the police, even though he rejected a ‘segment of violent rioters’.

Wheeler issued a statement urging residents to “continue with empathy and peace” as the investigation unfolds.

“This shooting is always traumatic for everyone involved and for our community, no matter the circumstances,” Wheeler said. “I want to express my condolences to the individual and their family. I also think of the officers involved.”

The area where the shooting took place is within the bounds of the operation for a new pilot project in the city called Portland Street Response, in which a team without police officers responds to reports of homelessness or people in a mental health crisis.
