Riots in Capitol lead to Selena Gomez striking social media executives: ‘You all failed the American people’

Selena Gomez blames the higher-end companies on social media companies Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Google for their alleged facilitation of allowing users to spread ‘hate’ after protesters stormed the US capital on Wednesday, killing four people.

The pop singer (28) shared a statement on her Twitter account on Wednesday night and asked that the standards at the big technology companies be changed.

“Today is the result of people with hatred in their hearts being allowed to use platforms that need to be used to bring people together and allow people to build a community,” Gomez tweeted Wednesday night.

She specifically exclaimed ‘Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Google’ and nominated their respective executives – Mark Zuckerberg, Sheryl Sandberg, Jack Dorsey, Sundar Pichai and Susan Wojcicki – to tag them in the post.

“You have all failed the American people today, and I hope you will put things right in the future,” Gomez said in a statement.

When reached on Thursday morning, a spokesperson for Twitter and Dorsey pointed to the policy of public interest, which was also shared on the platform late Wednesday.

“Our policy of public interest – which has led our enforcement action in this area for years – ends where we believe the risk of harm is higher and / or worse,” Twitter said.

“We will continue to evaluate the situation in real time, including the investigation into activities on the ground and statements from Twitter. We will keep the public informed, even if further escalation in our enforcement approach is needed.

Reps to Facebook, Instagram, Google and their CEOs did not immediately respond to Fox News’ request for comment.

This is not the first time that Gomez has accused large technology companies of improperly using their businesses. Late last month, singer “Lose You to Love Me” issued a warning about the alleged spread of “disinformation” about Facebook vaccines through Facebook.

“Scientific disinformation costs and will cost lives. @Facebook said they do not allow lies about COVID and vaccines to be spread on their platforms. Why is this still happening? Facebook is going to be responsible for thousands of deaths if they do not take action now! Gomez said while sharing a video on the issue shared by the Center for Countering Digital Hate.

However, a Facebook spokesman claimed that the company was committed to communicating accurate facts about COVID-19 vaccines and giving labels “Pages and groups that repeatedly share vaccines” and “remove accounts and content that violate our policies.”

Back in July, Gomez reappeared on social media after taking a breather and promising to be “a little more involved.”

Without diving into details, it appears that her comments refer to the increased racial tension in the United States amid the Black Lives Matter movement. She said: “It feels a little insensitive to post things that can only be joyful or festive.”

Police in Washington, DC, said late Wednesday that violating security at the U.S. Capitol resulted in four deaths – including a woman who was shot – and at least 52 arrests. At least 14 officers were also wounded during the protests, according to authorities.
