Riot of the Capitol: new radio and video footage shows a coordinated attack and officers’ self-control

CNN obtained more than 800 videos and audio files, including radio broadcasts and security recordings, obtained by the House Prosecution executives and submitted as evidence for former President Donald Trump’s second indictment.
The House Prosecution team obtained the surveillance videos from the Capitol Police and the radio broadcasts of the Metropolitan Police in Washington, DC, according to a source familiar with the discussions, which was conducted in the testimony of the trial. Home management managers – limited to the time they could present their case – use specific moments to present their arguments during the trial. They have shown horrific violence against police and the movements of attackers as they nearly reached out to lawmakers and Vice President Mike Pence.

Additional footage not used during the trial and reviewed by CNN provides even greater insight and reveals the brutality of the rioters as well as the self-control of the officers at the scene.

Radio broadcasts the distress of broadcasters while rioters broke through barriers and eventually police lines. When rioters began attacking the officers, it created an unbearable situation, radio waves filled with desperate shouts and requests for backing.

‘You’ll need more help above. We do not have enough people to hold the line, ‘said one official.

“We have fire extinguishers thrown at us from above … in the upper level of the entrance deck,” an officer shouted in another clip.

In one dispatch played during the trial, an officer exclaims that the rioters violated the scaffolding. “They are behind our lines!” he said.

The response, which was not played out during the trial, is a calm recommendation that officers should retreat and retreat inside if they have to.

“If they come after you, you do not have enough resources,” the officer said.

The videos sometimes show that the rioters do not fear the police. About 140 officers were injured in the deadly riot on January 6, in which one officer was killed.

Footage from the security camera near the living room shows rioters waving in reinforcements to get around the corner. In another video, more than 150 rioters can appear through an entrance within a minute and a half. In another surveillance tape, nine men in matching tactical gear move as a unit within the Capitol, at about the same time the FBI says members of the militant right-wing group are the ‘Oath Guards’, one of several groups held by federal authorities. implied since the riots, made their way inside.

In one cut, rioters make obscene gestures to officers and taunt them, refusing to back up or calm down. There are also other videos that capture rioters as they grab officers, hit and move to one side.

Camera footage carried by the body was shouted at prisoners during the trial: “Hold the line!” while surrounding and pushing rioting officers. In another video, officers are seen crowding a door to the Capitol, hitting insurgents with batons, while insurgents on the other side fight back with shields.

Another body camera video shows how quickly officers also turned into victims. In a clip shown during the trial, an officer fights a riot that got the officer’s baton in his hands. In the video, the officer appears to be slipping – the camera points to the sky as if the officer is lying on his or her back. A riot struck the officer further when other police tied up to pull him down.

One of the most horrific scenes shows a riot standing in front of an officer, grabbing his gas mask and shaking the officer’s head. The officer is simultaneously pushed against a door by the pressure of the police who want to defend the building.

Other frames captured bloody shoe prints on the concrete outside the Capitol.

The multiple angles of security footage and body camera also highlight the incredible restraint by police officers, suggesting that the riot could have been more deadly if officers had acted more aggressively. One riot, Ashli Babbitt, was shot dead as she tried to enter a window into the Speaker’s lobby – the hallway right behind the living room. Her death was the only known example of law enforcement resorting to deadly violence to try to stop the insurgents.

Prosecutors have charged more than 200 people with federal crimes in connection with the riots.

The video and audio used during the House’s indictment were aimed at forcing senators to confront the violence that took place on Jan. 6 – which the administration argued that Trump was responsible for inciting. The home managers’ submission showed senators how close the riots got to them when they fled the room on January 6th.

Trump was acquitted Saturday, although seven Republicans joined 50 Democrats to vote to condemn Trump, 57 to 43, less than the required two-thirds majority.

CNN’s Paul P. Murphy and Zachary Cohen contributed to this report.
