At the age of $ 20 slim cameras and $ 60 video doorbells, it may seem surprising to see a new debut of the doorbell with a price of $ 250. But that’s exactly how much Ring’s new Video Doorbell Pro 2 costs – and the price will give you a host of impressive features, from 3D radar to 1536p resolution, wide-angle and long-angle video. This new Ring doorbell is a luxury item and one with the ambition to save. Whether it will reach its potential remains to be seen.
The new Video Doorbell Pro 2 follows in the footsteps of the Video Doorbell Pro, which was launched in 2017 with the same high price (although at the time it looked a bit more for the course). The device was solid, if it ran a bit. However, the small design was a good step forward.
Unlike its predecessor, this new Doorbell Pro 2 offers some interesting features. With the radar, for example, users can monitor the movement of a person approaching the door, and set physical thresholds such as the edge of the front yard, to determine if an object is worth knowing or not. Then it will provide a bird’s eye view of the garden, with a dotted line indicating the person’s path. This is a useful feature if, for example, you are worried about someone enclosing the house.
The video offers a less interesting but no less welcome upgrade: the resolution is higher than any other Ring Doorbell and higher than most competitors. In addition, users will be able to see up to the threshold, which means that packages right next to the door will no longer be out of sight. Although not new, the $ 150 Arlo Video Doorbell has a aspect ratio that allows you to view packages along the door – this is a feature that should have more doorbells for videos.
A range of microphones will also help reduce sound distortion, and the Doorbell Pro 2 will also benefit from Ring’s most recent updates – such as end-to-end video encoding and Smart answers with Alexa.
The Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2 is available from today and can be pre-ordered from 31 March 2021.
