Hyperkin is best known for producing peripherals for games, but it also creates clones of consoles that allow you to play retro games in modern resolutions. Now it’s releasing a new retro console that lets you play Game Boy games on your TV. Hyperkin’s RetroN Sq (Square) is a console that lets you play Game Boy, GBC, and GBA cartridges.
The RetroN Square contains one wired USB “Scout” controller with a shape similar to an SNES controller. Instead of composite video connections, the RetroN Sq can be connected via a TV via HDMI to games scaled up to 720p resolution; there is also a switch with which you can change the aspect ratio to 4: 3 or 16: 9, depending on your preference.
With the console, you can play Game Boy and GBC patterns originally, while GBA games are referred to as a ‘beta feature’, but it is not noticeable which GBA games are compatible. The back of the console contains a memory card slot, which allows you to store firmware for the system.
I know the official product name suggests that it’s supposed to be a square console, but still the design looks more like a color, compact Nintendo GameCube that plays Game Boy patterns strictly, but I’ll let you be the judge of that.
Hyperkin’s RetroN Sq will be released on March 25 for $ 75. But if you already know you want to buy one, you can pre-order your unit on Hyperkin’s website. The device is in two colors: ‘black gold’ and ‘hyperstrand’, which to me looks more like a turquoise color.
