Restaurants and startups trying to surpass Uber Eats and DoorDash

Programs like DoorDash and Uber Eats have provided restaurants with an avalanche of customers in the pandemic. Now there are a bunch of tools for food ordering, along with a few restaurants, that are finding ways to implement the programs and the commission they charge.

DoorDash Inc., Uber Technologies Inc. see Eats and Grubhub Inc. restaurants can charge up to 30% of each order – a number of owners say profits are plummeting, even as more orders come in.

A new range of services promises online orders at lower cost for eateries by having the restaurants themselves arrange more deliveries.

Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc., Shake Shack Inc. and a growing number of chains have recognized the cost of app-based delivery orders, and many say they plan to address it. Local governments from New York to Seattle have applied rules to limit delivery app fees, in an effort to curb restaurant costs while keeping the health crisis at home.
