BOSTON (WHDH) – Boston-based researchers are looking for people to sign up for a new clinical trial that will evaluate whether vitamin D supplements could be an effective tool in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Vitamin D for COVID-19 study will determine if vitamin D supplements can reduce the severity of coronavirus symptoms and reduce the chance of infection, according to VIVID.

Brigham and Women’s Hospital is looking for people over 30 who have recently had a positive test result and have been experiencing symptoms for the past five days.

Those participating in the study will be asked to take the vitamin D or placebo study capsules for 28 days each day, give two blood samples per fingerprint at home and do short online surveys.

“Both observational studies and randomized trials suggest that vitamin D may reduce the risk of respiratory infections in adults and children,” said researchers. The potential role of vitamin D in protecting against infection by the new coronavirus leading to COVID-19 is promising but unknown. “
