Republican Senator Sasse blames Nebraska GOP for ‘foreign worship’ of Trump after state party punishment

The Republican Nebraska party on Saturday formally “reprimanded” Senuel Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) For his vote to accuse former President Trump earlier this year, though it was stopped due to formal censorship, CNN reported.

Why it matters: Sasse is the youngest among a number of Republicans to experience some sort of punishment from their state party apparatus after voting to accuse the former president. The senator responded on Saturday, according to the Omaha World-Herald, saying “most Nebraskans do not think politics should be about the strange worship of one man.”

The conclusion: “Senator Sasse’s condemnation of President Trump and his support for President Trump’s accusations has been repeatedly used by Democrats liberally as justification for a truncated indictment that denies the president the proper process,” the resolution read, according to CNN.

  • The party expresses “deep disappointment and sadness at the service of Senator Ben Sasse and calls for an immediate adjustment by which he represents the people of Nebraska in Washington and not Washington among the people of Nebraska.”

Sasse was reprimanded for the first time by the party in 2016, but was re-elected last fall with 63% of the vote, which is about 5 points more than Trump won in Nebraska.
