Private coach John Beck, a former NFL quarterback who played for then-offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan in Washington, has been working with Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields this season. Beck now lives with Shanahan and has been working with North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance for the past few weeks.
It is no coincidence.
Fields and Lance are one of the most likely prospects the San Francisco 49ers will pick No. 3 overall. ESPN’s Dan Graziano reports that Lance collaborated with Beck at the request of Niners.
San Francisco gave Beck a list of exercises they wanted to see from Lance, meaning they were heavily involved in planning Monday’s workout.
🧵 I’m told the 49ers are very involved in the Trey Lance workout scheduled for Monday. Lance, who works with QB coach Quincy Avery, has been working with QB coach John Beck for the past few weeks. Kyle Shanahan coached Beck in Washington a decade ago and trusts his opinion.

I’m told that Lance went to work with Beck at Shanahan’s request and that the Niners coaching staff gave Beck a list of the exercises they wanted Lance to work on before Monday’s workout. The 49ers designed the workout effectively and it will help to give it a go.

Other teams, including the Atlanta Falcons, are expected to attend Monday as well.
Other teams are expected to attend, according to sources, including the Hawks and Washington, but Lance is obviously considered for the 49ers at No. 3.

It is, of course, noteworthy that Beck also works with Justin Fields, who along with Mac Jones is also considered for the 49ers in third place.

“I know how he’s going to coach quarterbacks,” Beck said recently about Shanahan in an interview with The Athletic. “I know what he’s looking for. I think it’s an easy extension of Kyle in terms of the eyes I have for quarterbacks. ‘
San Francisco’s huge involvement in planning Lance’s second pro day may indicate that the team is really serious about the former Bison being an option for the overall number 3.
The 2021 NFL Draft begins on April 29 from Cleveland, Ohio.

Zierlein: Trey Lance is the perfect playmaker for Kyle Shanahan’s 49ers

10 April 2021
It’s almost two weeks since NFL Media analyst Lance Zierlein unveiled his latest mock concept. In it, he had the San Francisco 49ers Trey Lance of the North Dakota state select with the overall number 3 instead of Justin Fields of the state of Ohio or Mac Jones of Alabama. It does not sound as if his opinion on what head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch should do changed on April 29th. While Zierlein’s colleagues, Steve Wyche and Maurice Jones-Drew, made excellent cases for Fields as San Francisco’s choice, Zierlein stuck to his choice of Lance and defended the decision during a division on NFL Network. ‘This is the man San Francisco should be

Justin Fields of Ohio State is holding a second workout on Wednesday. Five days later, Trey Lance from the state of North Dakota takes part in his second. Both are trying to ensure they are selected ahead of Mac Jones of Alabama. Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence is expected to be drafted overall number one. The New York Jets are expected to beat Zach Wilson of BYU at no. 2 to select. Assuming San Francisco is a quarterback, then Jones, Fields and Lance as San Francisco’s pick is at number 3. Jones is the overwhelming favorite to be the pick. if you ask members of the national media. Fans prefer the more athletic outlook in Fields of Lance with a higher ceiling. Head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch chose to attend Jones
