Report: Ted Monachino will not return to Bere in 2021

The entire Chicago Bears defense staff can still get a complete overhaul.

First, Chuck Pagano stepped down as the Bears’ defensive coordinator days after their thinning out. Later, it was reported that defensive coach Jay Rodgers was leaving for a position with the Los Angeles Chargers. Recently, after a lengthy investigation, the Bears promoted Sean Desai, the coach of the security service, to the defense coordinator.

Now the Bears will be looking for a new coach from outside lineouts. Per Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, Ted Monachino will not return for the upcoming 2021 season.

Ted – no, not THAT Ted – was brought in by Chuck Pagano to fill the role of linebacker after Brandon Staley’s departure in 2019. Since 2019, he has coached a group in which Khalil Mack has appeared; Robert Quinn (which was a disappointment); Leonard Floyd; and a rejuvenated Barkevious Mingo.

Sean Desai and Matt Nagy, head coach, now have vacancies in the following positions:

  1. Defensive line
  2. Security (due to Desai’s promotion)
  3. Outside Linebackers

It is currently unclear why Monachino has not been retained at this time. I will admit that the total production versus money invested in his position group was not ideal. Only Khalil Mack, and sometimes other rotation players as well, provided some pass rate from the edge. So a change here could be performance related.

It is also not yet known who will be targeted for this position. However, Brad Biggs mentions analyst Bill Shuey as an internal candidate. We’ll let you all know who the man is as soon as one is found … or if this whole scheme goes upside down.
