There’s now a big possibility, if not a likelihood, that Phillip Lindsay will leave the Denver Broncos this off-season.
According to media reportsThe Broncos on Monday placed an original tender – worth $ 2,133 million for 2021 – on the restricted free agent.
That means the team will refuse the right at first if Lindsay signs an offer sheet with an outside suitor, but Denver will not receive compensation if the sheet does not match. (You may recall that the Broncos nearly lost CJ Anderson to the Dolphins in 2016 after choosing not to field him in the second round.)
Compare that to the $ 3,384 million second-round bid, which would make the Broncos a second choice at best or, at worst, secure Lindsay’s return next season.

A two-time 1000 full-back and former Pro Bowler, Lindsay, has struggled through an injury and statistically disappointing 2020 campaign in which the Colorado product has amassed just 502 touchdowns and one touchdown over 118 attempts (eight games). He added seven receptions for 28 yards, and he lost the catch to veteran Melvin Gordon, who led the Broncos with 1,144 yards of scrums and 10 total scores (nine rushes).
But Lindsay became increasingly dissatisfied with his position – or lack thereof – in the organization, and expressed his displeasure at the off-season on several occasions in public. Writing presumably on the wall, he alluded to a divorce in Denver during a March 10 interview on SiriusXM NFL Radio.
“What more can I do? What more can I show?” Lindsay replied when asked if he felt he wanted to.
Assuming Lindsay is indeed a fool, the Broncos want to move forward with Gordon, who is still facing potential league discipline over his arrest for drunk driving last October. (Gordon was removed from DUI charges.)
The team also has Royce Freeman under contract until 2021, though it is likely that the Broncos will address the position in next month’s draft.
Lindsay’s contract shift put an icy Monday off for new Broncos general manager George Paton, who re-signed defensive end Shelby Harris, bringing Ronald Darby, Ronald’s corner. wide receiver Tim Patrick.
