The Chargers announced Sunday night that Brandon Staley is their new head coach. As the former Rams defense coordinator, Staley’s plan to develop Justin Herbert is likely to be an offensive rookie of the year.

Apparently, one part of the strategy could be to bring another Rams coach with the 405 to Chargers headquarters.

According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Media, the offensive coordinator of Rams, Kevin O’Connell is a candidate To be Staley’s OC. Although O’Connell did not call up plays for the Rams, it would be a lateral move on paper, so head coach Sean McVay would have to approve O’Connell’s departure.

McVay has a history of that. Before becoming the Packers head coach, Matt LaFleur went from the Rams’ offensive coordinator in 2017 to the same position with the Titans so he could name plays.

Pelissero reports O’Connell and Staley are ‘very close’. But if the move from O’Connell to the Chargers in the city is not approved, Staley could keep Shane Steichen as offensive coordinator.

O’Connell has just finished his first year as the Rams’ attacking coordinator after spending three years as an attacking assistant at Washington.
