The Falcons, GM Terry Fontenot, and Arthur Smith, coach, are divided over what to do with the fourth overall pick. Unless it is not.

D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Fontenot and Smith now ‘agree’ with the franchise’s plan for selection. Fontenot reportedly was hoping to take a quarterback, and Smith apparently wanted to keep Matt Ryan for at least another two years.

It is unclear what the Falcons will eventually do. They can take a quarter (Trey Lance is attached to the Hawks), they can take a non-quarterback (Kyle Pitts, the fixed point, may be the choice), or they can trade.

How did the two men end up on the same page? It is safe to assume that owner Arthur Blank has a preference and that he has made it known. For a choice of this range, each owner will have a voice in the process of making it. Once the voice is practiced, it is wise to consider employees who want to stay profitable with the owner on what the owner wants.
