As expected, the Detroit Lions will make more roster moves to remove the space before the start of the new league year. Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, fullback Chase Daniel and defensive attacker Danny Shelton are released. Together, the moves should clear a total of $ 6.3 million for the 2021 season.
The Lions were reportedly looking for Daniel last week, but apparently could not find any suitors willing to take his $ 4.3 million salary this year (and possibly $ 5 million in 2022). Daniel signed a three-year deal last season, but because the Lions underwent a new rebuild, including a new starting quarterback, it spent far too much on a rugby quarterback.
The Lions are now without a third back in the rankings. While the Lions are doing well with youngster David Blough supporting Jared Goff, you should expect the Lions to add a veteran to help the young quarterback or to find someone to compete in April’s game.
As for Shelton, his absence will give the Lions the defensive tackle. Shelton are a talented veteran who will almost certainly end up on their feet with a team that appreciates a big, running stopper in the middle of their defense. However, the Lions want to strengthen their indoor rush and get around the defense a little faster. In addition, they have the sixth in the sixth round, John Penisini, who looked up to the part when he was forced as a rookie in the series. So if the new coach needs to have a nose grip in some formations, Penisini is the cheaper option.
The Lions may not be ready to cut players in the defensive position. While the Lions are likely to appreciate a man like Nick Williams more than the previous regime, his $ 5.25 million cap could be lifted to save $ 4 million in cap if released. If the Lions go that route, you can expect them to be active in search of defensive tackle depth.
