Texas Democratic congressman Henry Cuellar has called on President Biden not to visit the U.S.-Mexico border himself, saying a recent visit by a White House delegation was not enough.
‘Any president must come down [and] really spend time with border communities. “The president has sent a delegation and a bunch of people out of the White House,” the nine-time congressman told Fox News. “They did not talk to anyone about this, not even to members of Congress below.”
The Biden election in November – and the hope for a cautious immigration policy of his government – spurred the waves of new migrants, many of whom are fleeing poverty and crime in Central America.
Border patrol agents met more than 100,000 people last month. Thousands of minor minors are currently being held in shelters operated by the Department of Health and Human Services.
White House press secretary Jen Psaki acknowledged the extraordinary challenge now facing the border, but did not want to call the situation a crisis.
“I do not think we need to put new labels on what we have already conveyed, but it is a challenge,” she said during a briefing on Tuesday.
