Renters can apply for $ 23 million in rent in Onondaga County on Monday

Syracuse, NY – Onondaga County on Monday will take applications from tenants who need help reimbursing rent they missed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The province has $ 23 million in federal money to spend on rent relief.

Tenants and their landlords are encouraged to apply immediately, as the money will probably not cover everyone who is eligible. County McLahon, chief executive of the county, estimated today that the money would cover only about one-third to one-half of the need.

The tenant and the landlord of a given property must both apply for the benefit. The payments go directly to landlords.

McMahon said the province would prefer small landlords who own about 20 units or less, but he encouraged all landlords to apply. Province officials say the owners of larger apartment complexes are better able to take up lost rent payments, so they will get a lower priority for aid payments.

“We’re going to try to address the problem with the smaller landlords first and then address it for the larger landlords,” McMahon said. “Everyone has to apply.”

From Monday, the country will post a form on its website that can be completed and submitted online.

From two recent federal stimulus bills, Onondaga County received a total of $ 23 million to distribute as rent relief through the program that opens Monday. The country was able to arrange its own program for the distribution of the funds. In addition, the country also began distributing about $ 4 million received from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development under more complicated rules that delayed the distribution.
