ActugamingThe leak, which got the developer and the existence of the project right, claimed it would come out in 2020. It’s clear that this did not happen, although it does indicate that the remake could have started sometime this year.

Which studio is developing Diablo 2: Risen?

Back in May 2020, Actugaming claim that Vicarious Visions was busy with a Diablo 2 remake, although not much else has been heard about this project since. On January 22, fans of the studio became very concerned about the announcement that Activision Blizzard’s subsidiary would move from a lead developer for Activision games to a support studio for Blizzard Entertainment titles.

Vicarious Visions is the developer behind the successful Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 remakes, so it did not make much sense for Activision to lower them that way. Later that day, Bloomberg‘s Jason Schreier revealed the reason for the move.

Vicarious Visions are not just supporting games like Overwatch 2 and Diablo 4 but work directly with Blizzard Diablo 2: Risen because Blizzard Team 1, which made Warcraft 3: Reforged and originally going to work on this remake, was dismantled by Activision Blizzard late last year.

While Blizzard Team 3 (the Diablo 4 development team) is still technically the leading developer of the remake, Vicarious Visions will play a major role in delivering the remake as Team 3 focuses on finishing and shipping Diablo 4.

Because Diablo 2 is so loved among so many people, it definitely deserves a remake. While its creators have explained why such a project would be difficult to make in the past, Vicarious Visions and Blizzard seem to be committed to making it happen.

When will we find out more about Diablo 2: Risen?

Diablo 2: Risen has not yet been officially announced, but when can a statement be made? The most likely venue for a unveiling is BlizzCon, Blizzard’s annual event where they unveil new games and update players from older players. BlizzCon 2020 was canceled due to Covid-19, but an online replacement, BlizzConline, takes place in February.

BlizzConline is held February 19 and 20 February 2021. If Blizzard and Vicarious Vision are already willing to unveil the game, then we’ll learn it. However, this has not been confirmed by any leakage, and it is possible that the game requires more time in the oven.
