Tesla Inc. (TSLA.O)’s vehicle registrations in California fell slightly during the first quarter compared to last year, and this is offset by a slump in Model 3 registrations, according to data from Cross-Sell, a research firm that collect the title and registration data.

The carmaker reported record deliveries of vehicles for the January-March quarter earlier this month as strong demand for cheaper models offsets the impact of a global shortage of parts. read more

California registrations for Tesla’s Model 3 mass market sedan fell 54% year-on-year to 8,060, while Tesla’s Model Y compact crossover utility vehicle scored 12,227 in the first quarter, Cross-Sell data showed Tuesday showed.

Tesla said earlier that it is receiving strong reception from the Model Y in China and is rapidly advancing to full production capacity in the country.

The report also showed that registrations in California, a chime for the electric car maker and its largest U.S. market, declined from about 22,117 vehicles in the fourth quarter to about 21,520 vehicles in the first quarter.

The total first-quarter registrations in the 22 countries where data were collected were 44,502, with more than half of the registrations.

Registration numbers may not reflect the number of vehicle deliveries during the quarter, as registrations in the United States typically take about 30 days from the time of sale.

Tesla, whose shares rose more than 700% in 2020, is expected to report first-quarter results after the market closes on April 26.
