Cut – and you could have missed Reddit’s Super Bowl 2021 ad.
The social media site has released a 5-second ad that calls for “underdogs” – in an apparent nod to the recent Redditor-fueled GameStop frenzy.
“Big games are expensive, so we could not buy a full one,” reads the full text ad.
“But we were inspired and decided to spend our marketing budget on five seconds of airtime.”
It went on to say, “One thing we learned from our communities last week is that underdogs can accomplish almost anything if they have a common idea.”
It appears to be a reference to the WallStreetBets Reddit forum, whose members shocked investors last week by raising shares in GameStop and other companies in spite of large hedge funds.
‘Powerful things happen when people rush around for something they really care about. And there is a place for it. This is called Reddit, ”reads the advertisement on the website.
The unusual place forced several people to interrupt the game or turn back to read it.
‘If you missed the Reddit Super Bowl ad, it was only 5 seconds long. I definitely stopped reading it, “said one person. posted on Twitter.
Another viewer tweeted: “The reddit ad was great – had to go back and read it.”
‘Okay, the Reddit ad made us stop and look back and read it. Best marketing I’ve seen in a long time, ” a user added.
Even Reddit was apparently not sure that their message would get through.
“If you read it, it means our bet has paid off,” the ad began.
The company later responded to some Twitter users who posted the ad after it aired, including: “It worked !!!!”
Although it was unclear how much the site spent on the ad, a 30-second ad cost $ 5,500,000.
