Younger people who have not yet been vaccinated are helping to bring about an increase in new Covid-19 cases.
Five states – Michigan, New York, Florida, Pennsylvania and New Jersey – account for approximately 42% of newly reported cases. In Michigan, adults aged 20 to 39 have the highest daily incidence, new data show. The cases of children aged 19 and younger have more than quadrupled from a month ago. There have been 301 school outbreaks since early last week, up from 248 the previous week, according to state data.
Epidemiologists and public health authorities have pointed to school sports as a major source of Covid-19 transmission. Since January, the K-12 sports broadcast in Michigan has been the best in basketball, with 376 cases and 100 bunches; in hockey, with 256 cupboards and 52 bunches; and in wrestling, with 190 cases and 55 bunches. In general, cases and clusters have occurred in more than 15 sports institutions, state data show.
To drive the overall rise among younger people in Michigan, and wider, is a confluence of fatigue from the pandemic, leading some people to become closer contact, and the spread of the more transmissible British variant, known as B. 1.1 .7.
‘It used to be that we had groups of the variant. The cases were in fairly limited situations. We certainly see cases of variation in the general community, ‘said Emily Toth Martin, an epidemiologist at the University of Michigan’s School of Public Health. “It is worrying that we are seeing huge explosive increases in groups where we cannot use the vaccine.”
