There were a handful of controversial referee calls during Real Madrid’s 2-1 defeat to Levante by the Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium but nothing but the penalty awarded to the visitors in the second half.
Referee David Medie Jimenez initially gave a free kick for Vinicius Junior‘s challenge to Carlos Clerc on the edge of the penalty area.
However, after consulting with VAR in his ear, the official pointed to the spot, to the surprise of the home team.
Some of the Real Madrid players in the stands got off their seats and called on the referee to watch the incident on the monitor.
‘Look at it, it’s out [the box], it’s out! ‘comes the shout of the tribunes.
Warn by their teammates off the field, such as Karim Benzema, Luka Modric and Toni Kroos Jimenez approached to protest the decision.
The referee did not go to the monitor to review the incident, but proceeded to award the sentence.
“What a joke, what a joke!” calls the players in the stands.
Roger Marti takes the penalty kick but sees his attempt saved by Thibaut Courtois to keep the scores even.
