Readers Respond: Fix the Vaccine System Before Adding More Suitable Groups

Letters to the Editor

As a 72-year-old Oregon resident, I received the COVID-19 vaccine on February 22, along with thousands of people in my age group. Since then, I have spent many hours making an appointment for the vaccine on the Oregon Health Authority website. The site was hacked, as confirmed by The Oregonian / OregonLive (‘COVID vaccine appointments open to Oregonians 65 and older Monday: tips and troubleshooting’, February 28) and other news outlets.

Despite this systemic failure, the governor and other public health leaders announced that Oregonians 45 and older with underlying conditions could receive the COVID-19 vaccine on March 29. Is it too much to ask before the vaccine is opened for additional groups, the system the state uses to fix these appointments, instead of adding thousands of other Oregon residents who will definitely overwhelm a broken website? The failure of Oregon’s vaccination of vaccines is frustrating and dangerous. There is no acceptable excuse for that.
