You must read it Gizmodo report using Parler’s leaked GPS data to show that its users were among the mob that stormed the Capitol last Wednesday. The report comes in the wake of the fact that the social network is almost removed from the internet and is a good read for anyone who has followed the story. The reporters, Dell Cameron and Dhruv Mehrotra, had to sift through numerous posts to build a map of the riot:
Gizmodo mapped nearly 70,000 geologist Parler posts and on Tuesday isolated hundreds published near the Capitol on January 6, where a crowd of Trump supporters hoped to overthrow a democratic election and keep their president in power.
When Parler went down, a researcher was able to use horrific security practices to download almost all of his data – including videos containing tagged GPS locations. This is how Gizmodo the movement of the mob watched: from a Trump rally held earlier in the day, to finally in the Capitol building of the country.
Since the riot in Capitol, nearly every company Parler works with has dropped out as a customer, including Amazon, which provided the site’s data, and Google and Apple, which offered the app in their stores. The companies banned the website due to allegations that they had calls for violence against the US government.
While Gizmodo s’n report does not show how widespread the problem was on the site, it certainly shows that Parler was actively used by people who took part in the attack. It’s about in detail what the mob did, and how the GPS data shows certain moments that burned into many of our memories, so it’s worth reading.
