Rare Super Mario Bros. game sold for a record $ 660,000

The Dallas Auction Company said the NES cartridge was purchased as a Christmas gift in 1986 and was left untouched until the seller found it earlier this year.

“It has remained at the bottom of my office couch the entire time since the day I bought it,” the unknown seller said in the release. “I never thought about it.”

According to the auction company, it is also one of the earliest copies of the game that was shrink wrapped instead of a sticker seal.

This particular version of the game was first offered for sale in 1986, but Nintendo changed the packaging in early 1987, and only a relatively small number were sold.

“Because the production window for this and other similar products was so short, finding another copy of the same production in a similar state would be similar to searching for a few drops of water in an ocean,” said Valarie McLeckie, director of video games. for Heritage Auctions. “Never never say never, but there’s a great chance it can not be done.”

It was not the only video game that brought big money to the auction. A 1987 Mega Man cartridge sold for $ 144,000 and a buyer paid $ 102,000 for a copy of Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out !! made the same year.

The $ 660,000 prize includes the copper prize and breaks the previous record for a copy of the Super Mario Bros. game.

A copy of the 1985 game sold for $ 114,000 in July last year, the highest ever paid for a video game at the time, according to Heritage, which also handled the sale.
A sealed variant of Super Mario Bros. 3 broke the record in November and sold for $ 156,000, the company said.
