Rare sketches of Donkey Kong Country show with DK’s early evolution

In the latest video from DK Creations from YouTube (via NintendoLife), the longtime artist of the video game, Kev Bayliss, boasts original sketches of Rare’s Donkey Kong Country, and talk about how he changed Nintendo’s original cartoon monkey from 2D villain to 3D rendered platform hero.

Using sketches of the design of characters he created during the 1994 Super Nintendo Classic for Rare, Bayliss takes us from the original Shigeru Miyamoto Donkey Kong art faxed (faxed!) From Nintendo, to the strong, acrobatic monkey who we know and love. Miyamoto was not offensive, but his design does not look like Mario’s ex-girlfriend Pauline. The more brooding badass of Bayliss looks like he could cause problems all day.

Bayliss also shows sketches of enemies from the game, some of which did not make the final cut. Check out all of his sketches in the video below.
