Rapper Earl Simmons, better known as DMX, has been hospitalized in White Plains, New York, after suffering a heart attack, his lawyer told CBS News. Details about what could have caused the heart attack were not provided.
Attorney Murray Richman initially said DMX was removed from livelihood and breathing on his own, but when CBS News was later asked to confirm the details, Richman said “to my knowledge.”
DMX has been nominated for three Grammy Awards in his career, receiving two nominations in 2000 and in 2001. He has also been nominated for several other awards, including a 2006 BET Award for Video of the Year, an MTV male film breakthrough in 2002 for male breakthrough for “Exit Wounds” and several MTV Music Video Awards.
Support messages quickly spread on social media following the news of DMX’s condition, with many calling him a ‘legend’ in the industry.
“DMX’s story is so heartbreaking,” Andrew Barber of Fake Shore Drive tweeted. “It’s hard to explain how massive he was in the late ’90s / early’ 00s. He touched people in a way I can not explain.”
