Rapoport: Steelers sign LB / S Miles Killebrew to one-year deal

The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed their first free agent not named BJ Finney, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, former Detroit Lions’ Miles Killebrew, for a one-year deal.

Killebrew is considered a safety / linebacker hybrid coming from Southern Utah. Last season, he scored twelve tackles. He started four career games for the Lions. He did not play a single defense for Detroit in 2020, but made the second most special teams spin with 354 on the team.

Killebrew was on our wish list last season. Here is what we wrote at the time.

‘Lose Tyler Matakevich? You look at his replacement. Killebrew is considered a safety, but he was considered a hybrid player early in his career. He failed as a piece of defense, but became an important special tea maker. In the article we wrote yesterday to keep the case for Dirty Red, Killebrew has equaled 5th since 2016 with 30 total special teams tackled since 2016.

Is it a 1: 1 trade should Matakevich go elsewhere? Kinda. Killebrew is a safety, at least in name, but functionally they will serve the same purpose. And he also has to come in cheap, which is the key with most of these players. ”

He will help fill the shoes that Vince Williams has released and provide depth in the lineout player while being a potential special teammate. Or if the team considers him a boxing safety, he will fulfill Sean Davis’ role, assuming Davis is not signed again.

If you want to get back to the beginning, check out our draft profile for 2016 on Killebrew, written by me. I did not put an adjustable grade on him, but noticed that he is the value of special teams.
