Lenovo and NEC have just unveiled a concept mini-computer that shows how effective Nintendo’s approach with the Switch was.

Part of the LaVie series – which is a joint venture between the two companies – the LaVie Mini is a small laptop with an 8-inch, 1920 x 1200 pixel touch screen and an 11th Intel processor with Xe -graphics.

Judging by the images shown, this system, should it ever hit the market, would not offer the most comfortable ticking experience, but the aim here is to claim that the holy grail of consumer convergence: a portable computer that also works as a portable gaming system.

Not only do Lenovo and NEC display this system with removable controllers that bolt to the sides of the main unit, they also have a docking station that can send a 4K signal to your TV or monitor. Like so many of these concepts, however, there is a problem; even without the controllers attached to the LaVie Mini, it shows the scales at 1.28 pounds. The Switch, with its Joy-Con attached, weighs 0.88 pounds.

Since many other attempts at these kinds of things have either failed or passed the concept stage, it remains to be seen whether the LaVie Mini will become a solid reality. Whatever happens, that’s another justification for Nintendo’s unique approach to its latest gaming system. If you can not beat it, join.
