Pokémon Sword and Shield, released on Nintendo Switch in 2019, is currently the latest entry in Pokémon’s main series of games. Of course, many Sword and Shield players will have been at the franchise from the start, and while the new games are fun in their own way, nostalgia means that the original Red and Blue on Game Boy will always be pretty special, too.
But what if you can mix the two somehow? Well, while this is pretty much impossible for the majority of us, the Japanese YouTube user ハ ヤ テ 京 雲 寺 recalled the new games in the style of the Game Boy classic. ‘I listened to the BGM of the city of Sword & Shield [and] I wanted to listen to Game Boy style! “Sê ハ ヤ テ 京 寺.” I could not find it when I searched for it, and made it myself! “
A whole lot of work later, and the video below was born. After a beautiful introduction and a quick remake of the opening of Pokémon Red and Blue, the video dives into places and songs from Sword and Shield, all designed in Game Boy style. You will see famous places like Wedgehurst and Motostoke, all accompanied by chiptune versions of the songs from the new titles. These are impressive things.
It was only a month or so ago that we also came across an amazing piece of work by an artist named Pat Ackerman, who introduced each new Pokémon from Sword and Shield in sprite form in Game Boy style. Maybe it’s becoming a (very welcome) trend?
