Rams full-backs Jared Goff and John Wolford are expected to have an open competition for the starting line-up next season if both remain on the roster, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Goff, 26, has been the Rams’ full-time starting quarterback for the past four years and led the team to a Super Bowl appearance during the 2018 season. Wolford, 25, has been with the Rams as a backup since signing in April 2019.
Wolford made his first start on January 9 in LA’s win in Week 17 over the Cardinals as Goff recovered from a thumb operation. He was also named as the starter in the game card round, but he is early due to a neck injury.
In his Week 17 victory, Wolford recorded 231 passing yards and 56 running yards with one interception.
The Rams reportedly “as they saw” at Wolford during the time he played, and likes what he showed in training camp, per Rapoport.
As for the potential Goff trade, Rams GM Les Lesead has left its options open.
“What I can say is that Jared Goff is a ram at the moment,” Snead said Tuesday. ‘It’s way too early to speculate about the future. This is a beautiful mystery. ‘
Goff has scored 45 overall wins, including three playoff games, during his last four seasons with the Rams. This is the second most in the NFL behind Tom Brady (55). He is under contract until 2024.
