Josh Jacobs is clearly VERY happy to be alive today … TMZ Sport got the cup shot this week just after the NFL star’s car wreck – and you can see he sustained a KNARLY head injury during the crash.
As we reported earlier, the cops say Jacobs destroyed his ride near Las Vegas airport at 4:42 a.m. Monday.
In new police documents obtained by TMZ Sports, officers say Jacobs smelled of liquor when they found him at the accident site.
In the documents, the police claim that Jacobs explained to them why he crashed … “a moderate smell of an unknown alcoholic beverage” comes from the Raiders running back.
Police officers say Jacobs also bled on his forehead from a ‘large tear’ … and officers added the 22-year-old told them he believed he had fallen asleep at the wheel just before the accident.
In the documents, the officers say that Jacobs was treated for his injuries and transported to the hospital … and once there, the police further questioned him about alcohol and driving.
Cops say they performed a sobriety test on the NFL player while he was lying in his hospital bed … but they say he passed it.
Nevertheless, officials in the doctors claim that he ‘did have a strong smell of alcohol from his person’.
Cops in the documentation also say at one point that morning when Jacobs admitted he was drinking before sitting behind the wheel.
Cops claim they also reviewed surveillance videos of the crash and believed they had had enough to arrest Josh on suspicion of DUI.
In turn Josh – by his lawyers David Z. Chesnoff and Richard A. Schonfeld – denies that he was drunk behind the wheel.
“We intend to file an innocent plea on behalf of Mr Jacobs if he is ever charged,” they said in a statement.
Jacobs played a major role in the Raiders’ victory over the Broncos a few hours before the Vegas accident. He had 89 yards and 2 TDs on 15 yards.
