PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A raccoon from the Duquesne Heights neighborhood in Pittsburgh tested positive for rabies. It is the first animal to test positive for rabies in Allegheny County in 2021.
The Allegheny County Department of Health said earlier this month an animal rescue organization had been warned of the animal and taken it in to care for it.
The raccoon was treated by the scabies organization until the symptoms began to show with rabies.
No human exposure was reported by the animal rescue organization or any residents.
The health department in the province reminds residents to pay attention to unusual behaviors in animals and to make sure that pets are vaccinated with rabies.
If you see an animal acting strangely, you are asked to call the Pennsylvania Commission or the police.
If you have been bitten, the province’s health department says you need to clean the wound, get medical treatment and call the health department to report the incident.
