The royal family announced the death of the Duke of Edinburgh in a statement on Friday.

The British royal family added that it was working with ‘people all over the world’ to mourn their loss’, noting that additional announcements would come.

The 94-year-old reigning king will now stop royal duties. State affairs were also interrupted and no laws would grant royal permission.

Additional periods of royal mourning are expected to continue after the first eight days. The United Kingdom is expected to go into a period of ten days of mourning, and the British royal household is expected to extend its period by 30 days.

According to tradition, the royal family members are expected to wear black or dark clothes during this time. After a funeral service, the queen is expected to remain privately mourning while performing her duties privately.

An announcement about Philip’s death was placed on the gates of Buckingham Palace on Friday, but it is expected to be taken down sometime later Friday under restrictions amid the coronavirus pandemic.

During England’s shutdown of the coronavirus, Philip stayed with the Queen in Windsor Castle, west of London.

On February 16, Philip was admitted to a London hospital after feeling unwell. On March 3, he underwent a procedure for an existing heart condition in the St. Bartholomew’s Hospital before being transferred to King Edward VII Hospital on 5 March and finally released on 16 March.

A former naval officer and avid polo player, Philip had strong health until old age, but over the past few years he has had several health problems.

In 2011, he was rushed by helicopter to a hospital after suffering from chest pain and being treated for a clogged coronary artery. In 2017, he spent two nights at King Edward Hospital and in 2018 he was admitted to hospital for ten days for a hip replacement.

Philip was last admitted to hospital in December 2019 and spent four nights in King Edward Hospital for what according to the palace was planned treatment of an existing condition.

He was forced to stop driving at the age of 97 after hitting a car in January 2019 while driving a Land Rover near Sandringham estate. Philip needed help to get out of the Land Rover, but was not injured. A woman in the other vehicle sustained a broken wrist.

Although he married in the British monarchy, royals have been in Philip’s blood since birth. On June 10, 1921, he was born Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark – the only son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Princess Alice of Battenberg, as well as the great-grandson of Queen Victoria.
