Queen described the death of Prince Philip as “leaving a huge void in her life”, says Prince Andrew

The Duke of York spoke to the media after attending a service at the chapel at Royal Lodge Windsor: “I feel very sorry and support my mother who probably feels this way more than anyone else.”

Prince Philip, the lifelong companion of the Queen and the longest serving in British history, died on Friday at the age of 99. His body will lie at Windsor Castle until his funeral on Saturday.

“He was a remarkable man, I loved him as a father. He was so calm. If you had a problem, he would think about it,” Andrew said. “He was always someone you could go to.”

The news was received with an outpouring of tributes from around the world, including messages from US President Joe Biden and other world leaders.

The royal family itself feels ‘everyone has a great sense of loss’, the duke said. “We almost lost the grandfather of the country.”

Asked how his mother feels, Andrew replies: ‘The queen, as you would expect, is an incredibly stoic person. And she described her passing as a miracle.

“She described it as a big gap in her life,” the duke said, adding that the family was “coming together to make sure we were there to support her.”
