505 Games recently acquired developer Infinity Plus Two, a studio that owns the rights to the Puzzle Quest Game 3 series. This series started in 2007 and is fondly remembered for making RPG mechanics popular in match-3 games, adding depth to the genre while providing a fair price point. Obviously, things have changed over the last 14 years, and now the match-3 genre is pretty much synonymous with terrible earnings, especially on mobile devices. Well, 505 Games has just announced that it will bring Puzzle Quest 3 to mobile and computers later this year. Unfortunately, we already know that the developer intends to launch the title as a free-to-play release, so I will not get my hopes up on this long-awaited follow-up, as the stated direction is worrying.
505 Games has released a trailer for Puzzle Quest 3, along with the announcement that the game will be released later this year. As you would expect, nothing of the game was displayed. The trailer is a movie. So, for now, no one knows what Puzzle Quest 3 will look like or what it will look like.
What we do know is that the game will feature a kind of 1-on-1 combat system and that the story will take place 500 years after the events of the original Puzzle Quest. So at least new game mechanics have been planned, but I’m careful it would simply indicate the advent of offensive F2P systems.
