Russian President Vladimir Putin now says he will receive his country’s Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine, a month after saying he would not be injected with it.
A Kremlin spokesman told a Russian state TV channel about the turnaround.
“He made this decision and waited until all formalities were completed,” Dmitry Peskov said.
The 68-year-old leader has worked remotely since the beginning of the pandemic and largely avoided it. He said one of his daughters took part in the clinical trial for the Sputnik V vaccine, which according to the country is more than 90 percent effective, and she felt good afterwards.
Russians over the age of 60 could begin applying for shots on Monday, a day after health officials approved the vaccine for the elderly after a separate trial.
According to the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control, Russia has about 2.8 million cases of coronavirus and about 49,000 deaths due to the virus.
