Due to an error, Slack for Android may have briefly entered your passwords as plain text, which means you may need to change your password.
As reported by Android Police (h / t The edge), has sent an email to some people using Slack for Android, requesting that you reset your password as soon as possible. According to the email, Slack developers made a mistake that caused your Slack password – unencrypted – to be included in the app’s logs.
This issue, launched on December 21, 2020, was first fixed and corrected until January 21, 2021. During the 31-day period, it is possible that Slack for Android exposed your password in the logs. If your problem has been affected by this account, you should also have received the email from Slack to reset your password.
That said, if you use Slack for Android regularly, especially during the period in question, it might be safer to change your password anyway. In addition, you want to clean the storage of Slack for Android so that log files that do not contain a password are on your phone.
How to change your Slack password and delete logs
Unfortunately, although this password issue was caused by Slack’s Android app, there’s no way to change your app’s password. Instead, use the desktop or web application to update your Slack password.
- Open Slack on the desktop or on the web
First, you need to open Slack on your desktop or laptop, either through a native Windows / macOS / Linux app or the universal web app.
This is at least possible to sign in to Slack’s web app from Chrome for Android using the “Desktop site” switch, but the experience will be awkward and not touch-friendly.
- Go to account settings
Then click on your profile photo in the top right corner of the app and click on “Viewing ProfileIn the menu. In the panel that opens, you should see a button with three dots called ‘More’. Click on it and then click on “Account settings. ”
- Change or reset your password
Now you should see a heading that ‘Password. Click on theexpandRight of it.
Here you can change your login information directly by entering your previous and a new password, or you can send yourself an email resetting your password if you have lost your password.
- Repeat for each workspace
Since each Slack workspace uses its own login information, you want to repeat this password change process for each workspace you are part of.
- Change any overlapping passwords
Since there is a chance that your Slack passwords have been discovered, it may be a good idea to change the passwords as well if you use them on another website or app.
- Find Slack in the Settings app
Since your password is stored in the logs of the Slack app, you need to manually delete the logs from your phone. First, you want to find Slack in the Settings app of your phone. If your app is looking for Settings, you can simply search for “Slack”. Otherwise, you need to find Slack in your list of installed programs.
- Delete the data
Next, tap “Storage” or “Storage & cache” to manage the data from the Slack app. Tap “Clear storage” to clear your phone of all data related to Slack for Android, including logs containing passwords.
Note that you log out of each Slack workspace. You must sign in again to ensure that your notifications are still received correctly.
